Lydia Jean Powell-Lara, a resident Snyder, Oklahoma known affectionately by all as Lee passed away peacefully on July 4, 2023, in Snyder, Oklahoma, at the age of 63. Born on October 9, 1959, in Talihina, Oklahoma, to Louise (Smith) Harjo and Bennie McDermott, Lydia's life was filled with love, laughter, and a deep sense of community.
Lydia spent her formative years in the Dustin area, where she attended Ryal-Graham School. A spirited and active student, she played basketball, softball, and occasionally enjoyed playing hooky. Her youthful energy and love for sports were qualities she carried with her throughout her life, evident in the joy she found in watching her grandchildren play basketball and football.
Following her schooling, Lydia bravely served in the US Army as a material control and accounting specialist. Her dedication to her country was a testament to her courage and resilience. After her service, she transitioned into the medical field where she worked as a Certified Nurses Aid and Certified Medication Aid. Her compassionate nature and commitment to helping others were truly embodied in her work. She married Aniseto "Pete" Lara on October 9, 2008 in Tillman County, Oklahoma at their home. Lydia was a woman of many interests. She loved antiquing and was known for her keen eye for unique and special pieces. A trip to the casino was always a delight for her, not just for the games, but for the camaraderie and excitement. At home, Lydia was an avid homemaker, creating a warm and welcoming environment for her family and friends. Her fondness for animals was evident in her pets, which included dogs, pigs, and a mule, each cherished and cared for with immense love.
Lydia's life was marked by her strength, her commitment to her family and community, and her unwavering love for those she held dear. Her memory will be cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. As we say goodbye to Lydia, we celebrate the life she lived and the joy she brought to those around her. Her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the power of love, family, and community.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Thomasena Watson and son Anthony Watson, her parents, Louise (Smith) Harjo and Bennie McDermott, her brother, Johnny Powell, and her sisters, Norma Kay Powell and Polly Powell. Each of them held a special place in her heart and their memories will continue to live on in Lydia's legacy.
Lydia is survived by her husband Pete Lara, son, Richard Morgan, and daughter, Justina Powell. Her joy and pride in her family extended to her beloved grandchildren, Mekko Smith, Jaide Smith, and Blain Morgan, who brought immense happiness into her life. She is also survived by her sisters, Nellie Powell and Jensie (Powell) Jimboy, and her cousins, Roman Powell and Jerry Powell, who will remember her fondly for her warmth and resilient spirit.

Viewing for Lydia will be on Sunday, July 9, 2023 from 1:00 PM till 4:00 PM at Integrity Funeral Service, 410 East Trudgeon Street, Henryetta, Oklahoma. A wake service will be held on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 7:00 PM at the Yardeka Indian Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 10, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Yardeka Indian Baptist Church with Reverend Wallace Gambler officiating. Burial will follow the service at Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Military Funeral Honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the United States Army from Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
